Cost-Effective Ways to Brighten Up your Garden

Australia is a country where the outdoor life is enjoyed with year-round warm temperatures and if you are a homeowner who is looking to make a few changes in your outdoor living space, you have come to the right place, as we present a few cost-effective ways that you can brighten up your garden.

  • Vertical gardens – A vertical garden can be affixed to a wall or it can be attached to a small frame. Start with some green netting and using old plastic containers, you can plant creeper types of plants that, with training, will eventually cover the netting with attractive greenery. If you would like to learn about these and other garden features, subscribe to Gardening Australia magazine, which is a spin-off from the very popular ABC television series that we all know and love.
  • Create a water feature – The sound of running water has calming properties and building a pond and a small stream is one way of introducing water to a garden. A few yards of topsoil, some rocks, a fibreglass pond, PVC piping and a small pump are all you need to build such a feature. Another idea is to buy a water fountain and install it in the middle of the lawn; a couple of hours of plumbing would see the fountain connected and with a water pump, you can turn the water on or off at any time. LED lights enhance the look and give the garden a Disney feel.
  • Homemade plantation boxes – Order a few sheets of plywood and some 2×2 and you can make stylish and elegant plantation boxes in which you can plant shrubs and small trees. Of course, they need to be painted and make sure there are holes in the bottom to allow water to seep through. If you are not confident about doing this, there are some great how to videos on YouTube that show you step by step, exactly how to make plantation boxes.
  • LED strip lighting – They come in a range of colours and they use minimal energy; drape them over trees, along window or door frames, paired with some ground level LED lights, your garden will take on a whole new look. You can even add a light sensor and your garden lights will come on as the sun goes down.
  • Repaint the deck – If your timber decking is looking jaded, why not stain it a slightly darker shade? Start by clearing the deck, then sanding it down and after a quick brush, the deck is ready for painting. This can be done in a day and it will make a difference, especially with some new outdoor furniture.

These are just a few ways that you can brighten up your garden and the World Wide Web is host to free resources to give you even more garden makeover ideas.
